Erika Ann SUMILANG-ENGRACIA is currently working full-time for SGS GBS Asia as a Certification Business Enhancement Specialist for their Japanese clients. Her diverse work experience ranges from a language instructor, trainer, communication assistant for the deaf and mute, to a futures and options trade service specialist for an investment bank. She graduated cum laude from the University of the Philippines, with a BA degree in Speech Communication and a Masters degree in Asian Studies with Japan as a specialization. Her fields of interests are on Pop Culture, Media Studies, Games, Intercultural Communication and the interplay of language and culture. This mix of diverse experiences (and hobbies) has enabled her to write varying numbers of researches on the different fields that she is interested in, such as her paper On Translating Silence in US Film adaptation of Japanese Movies presented during the 6th Asian Translation Tradition Conference last 2014, her interest in games that led to her research on Repackaging Japanese Culture: The Digitalization of Folktales in the Pokémon Franchise which was presented at the Seminar: “Japan Pop Goes Global: Japanese Pop Culture on Aesthetics and Creativity” at Aoyama Gakuin University in 2017, and more recently her study on Representations of Masculinity in Locally Aired TV Commercials is to be presented in The 14th Asia Pacific Sociological Association Conference Hakone this October 2018.
